Simply put- it’s pure. So pure, it’s often called extra virgin.

If you’ve never used olive oil on your skin, let it touch you for the first time and give you that summer glow.

Break open your cupboard and use some natural olive oil to repair your dry skin, damaged hair and more.

Olive oil is the only oil made from a fruit. It’s not only good for your heart, but also great to apply on your body. Holistic Healer, Stephanie Moore gives these olive oil beauty tips:

“Cuticles and nails: If your cuticles are ragged and your nails are brittle, soak your nails in a cup of olive oil.

Feet: Before you go to bed, smear olive oil on your feet, put on socks, and you’ll wake up in the morning with the softest feet ever.

Lips: Soothe your dry, chapped lips, by dabbing on a little olive oil.

Hair: Massage olive oil on your scalp and hair. Cover your hair with a shower or bathing cap and leave on for about 30 minutes. Shampoo. Olive oil helps repair split ends, heals dandruff, and makes your hair silky, and lustrous. Put a few drops on your hair when it’s dry to eliminate the frizz.

Skin: Rub olive oil on your hands to soften and moisturize. It’s rich in squalene, a natural organic compound and emollient that penetrates the skin, and won’t leave a greasy film on it.

Bath: Add a few tablespoons of olive oil to your bath to soothe your skin.

Makeup remover: Use a little olive oil on a Q-tip to take your makeup off. It’s as good as any drugstore brand.”

Look for olive oil in lip balms, shampoo, hand lotion and soaps - and always use the purest extra virgin olive oil, which is the least processed, and gets its oil from the first pressing of olives.

Use extra virgin olive oil not only internally for your inner health, but externally for your outer beauty as well.

Now’s the time to stop being an (olive oil) virgin.

Your personal beauty starts with the look and condition of your skin. To improve the condition of your skin and to protect it from the damages caused by your environment there are several skin care tips that you can follow. First you will want to use a quality moisturizer every day. This moisturizer should be formulated for the type of skin that you have. For example if you have oily skin you will not want to use an oily moisturizer. You should also look for a moisturizer that has SPF in it. This will help protect your skin from sun damage throughout the year. Proper cleansing of the skin is also important to do daily. For this you will want to use a mild soap or skin cleanser that is designed to remove dirt and oil from your skin without drying it out. An exfoliant is another skin care product that you may want to use periodically to remove dead skin cells.

In addition to lotions, cleansers and exfoliants you may also want to use beauty products that are designed to address specific beauty problems. For example if you want to improve the firmness of your skin you can use a skin firming lotion. Many brands of lotions offer a skin firming formula. These products are fairly effective at tightening up loose and sagging skin. However, results will vary from person to person. Other beauty issues that can be addressed by using an over-the-counter beauty product include products for sunless tans, products for acne and products that reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

The third category of beauty tips deal with cosmetics. Your cosmetics should be used to de-emphasize features that you don’t like and to enhance the features that you do like. The type of cosmetics that you use should be based upon your coloring, the type of look you are after and the type of skin that you have.

The final category of beauty tips deals with hair care. Your hair is one of the first things that people will notice. To put your best foot forward you will want to make sure that your hair is healthy and that it is cut in a style that flatters your face shape. You should use quality hair care products and you should select hair care products that are designed to meet the needs of your hair texture and type

Although long-awaited (especially when you live in Maine, as I do), summer brings with it its own seasonal beauty challenges, such as:

1. Exposed bikini lines;
2. Bare, white legs;
3. Open-toed sandals and look-at-me feet;
4. Drips of perspiration;
5. Increased sun exposure;
6. Frizzy hair;
7. Melting make-up;
8. Unsightly insect bites.

And the list goes on…

So, to help us enjoy all the advantages of summer without forsaking our looks, we’ll examine each of these potential challenges over the next few weeks and see how to overcome them naturally. First off:

Exposed Bikini Lines

Yikes! If you tried on a bikini or high-cut swimsuit recently, you may have noticed that your bikini area needs some extra TLC, now that it is going to be on public display.

While there are several ways to accomplish this, such as trimming, shaving, waxing, laser and electrolysis, there is a great method that can be done in the comfort of your own home, using natural ingredients and with “relatively” little discomfort.

It’s called Sugaring.

If you are not familiar with this hair removal method, it dates back to ancient Egyptian times and, as the name suggests, consists of using a sugar paste to remove hair from the follicle. The basic paste is made from sugar, lemon juice and water and can be enhanced with essential oils to further soothe the skin.

I should mention that if you are new to bikini hair removal, you will probably rate your (dis)comfort level on a par with waxing. However, the upside is subsequent hair re-growth is slower, less painful and easier to remove.

You can also take a little jar of the paste with you on your travels and have it on hand to remain hair-free, especially when you need to tame any wild chin hairs or keep your upper lip mustache-free!

Benefits of Sugaring:

• All natural ingredients;
• No razor burn!;
• Sugar paste does not adhere to the skin, only to the hair, so there is little, if any, skin irritation;
• Rinses away with water, so you don’t have to worry if you put the paste in the wrong place or need to remove any residue;
• Removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface;
• Re-growth becomes sparse and thinner with repeated use;
• Gently removes hair from the root;
• Does not break the hair at the surface;
• No chemical odor;
• Environmentally-friendly.

Although you can make your own sugar paste, there are several professional-grade sugaring products on the market - for both men and women - that will save you a lot of time and effort. The added bonus is that they are also certified organic.
